Optimization of the building envelope in the early planning
The Energy Design Guide first computes best numeric values and displays them in graphs. The curves and the relevant figures allow an interpretation that can be transferred to architectural choices such as construction type, glazing partition and glazing quality necessary for low-energy need and make a variety of architectural solutions possible. It does not, however, quantify thermal demand.
Early energetic optimization
The EDG needs only a few data fort he first computations:
loss factor
window size/glazing quality
construction type
and is thus well suited for optimum planning at an early stage.
Optimization potential of 80–90%
can already be exploited by focusing on these most relevant factors. More complex simulation programs are thus often unnecessary.
